Griffith Park is tagged as one of the largest municipal parks with urban wilderness areas in North America. It was named after the former owner, Colonel Griffith J. Griffith. He was a Welsh philanthropist and industrialist. It spans more than 4,200 acres of land. It was part of the land granted by the Spaniards, Rancho Los Feliz. In 1896, Griffith gave five square miles of Rancho Los Feliz to the people of Los Angeles. Over the years, many people further donated land, including city purchases and private land, to public domain revision. Thus, the reason why Griffith Park expanded to its present size.
